2017 International Day of the African Child

In sub-Saharan Africa, children are 15 times more likely to die before the age of five than children in developed regions. To further reduce child mortality, we know we must achieve high and equitable coverage of lifesaving interventions.

As a vital contributor to the global movement to prevent child and maternal deaths, MCSP is working from the household to health facility to improve the lives of children. Knowing more than half of child deaths can be prevented through appropriate tailored counseling or treated with simple, affordable interventions motivates us to continually increase access to lifesaving treatments.

In areas such as Nampula, Mozambique – where children suffering from diarrhea have to travel great distances to reach the nearest health center for treatment – MCSP is rolling out an integrated project to provide improved nutrition, child health and target healthy hygiene behaviors.

In Kenya, MCSP-trained health workers give children vitamin A supplements to prevent blindness, infections and other ailments.

About 45% of all child deaths are due to malnutrition. When parents are counseled on the best foods to give their children in each stage of life, families thrive. In Mozambique, mothers attend cooking classes run by MCSP-trained community health workers, where they learn to make nutritious food with locally available and inexpensive ingredients.

In a small community in Ghana, MCSP supports health workers to provide integrated treatment for pneumonia, diarrhea and malaria both at the local clinic and through community visits.

In Kenya, MCSP trains nurses to assess nutritional status and provide infant and young child feeding counseling to caregivers to ensure families understand the importance of adequate nutrition and healthy growth.

On a global level, as Secretariat of the Integrated Community Case Management (iCCM) Task Force, MCSP collaborates with UNICEF, WHO, USAID, NGO representatives, and other partner organizations to improve planning, implementation and scale-up of iCCM.

Every day in 25 USAID priority countries, MCSP is working to end preventable child deaths by making treatment, counseling and services available to those most at risk by putting the "whole" child together.
